Abstract

Recently, control properties of thermally coupled distillation sequences have been explored for the separation of ternary mixtures. In some papers, it has been established that the recycle streams in the thermally coupled distillation sequences can deteriorate their dynamic behavior. In this work, we explore the controllability properties of two thermally coupled distillation sequences with side columns and two alternate distillation sequences (by using the singular value decomposition technique at zero frequency). The alternate distillation sequences do not have recycle streams and are thermodynamically equivalent to the thermally coupled distillation sequences with side columns (stripper or rectifier columns). The results show equivalent energy consumptions between the two types of distillation sequences, but the theoretical control properties are better in the systems that include recycle streams than in the uncoupled distillation sequences. This result shows that an increment in the number of recycle streams does not necessarily cause additional control problems
